Waterstone Visit

As part of World Book Day celebrations, each class will visit Waterstones in town where they will participate in a variety of reading related activities. A member of staff will talk to the children about the books they can buy with their free book voucher and give them a summary of the different stories. The children are looking forward to having the opportunity to visit the shop to 'spend' their vouchers and participate in the different activities.

World Book Day 2020

To celebrate World Book Day 2020, Pupil Voice Council planned a special day for children in school. Alongside dressing up as their favourite characters from books, Pupil Voice Council decided that the whole school should come together for a reading session across the school. The children enjoyed sitting and reading their books with their friends across Edna G. Olds Academy.

Science Launch Day

On the first day of this half-term, the children enjoyed a topic launch day related to their new science topics. A variety of exciting, hands-on, activities were planned across school which gave the children an insight into their new topics and inspired lots of questions which they are excited about answering this half-term. In Year 6, as part of the light and electricity topic, the children were set a challenge of creating a periscope to allow them to see over a wall while in Year 5, the children created their own balloon powered rockets. The children thoroughly enjoyed coming up with creative ways to solve this problem and showed true creativity in their solutions!

Enterprise Week

Enterprise Week has commenced! Across school, the children will be spending the next week researching, designing and making products to sell at the Enterprise Fair on Thursday 13th February. Which class will make the most profit?!

Y5 Holocaust visit

On Thursday 13th February, Year 5 visited the National Holocaust Centre as part of their topic on World War II. It was an informative and moving day. The day started with the children watching a recording of a Holocaust survivor telling his story. He had lived in Germany but found safety in Britain through the Kindertransport and unlike many children like him, his parents joined him a few months later. Finding out about the events leading up to the Holocaust was also particularly interesting. The children learnt how anti-Jewish messages were spread through the community and that children suddenly stopped playing with Jewish friends because they were forbidden to. Particularly shocking was the replica of a street after Kristallnacht which was when Jewish shops and businesses were attacked and their windows were smashed. Year 5 enjoyed this trip and left feeling moved by what they had discovered. 

Extended Learning Club presentation to Nottingham High School

We had the privilege of planning and delivering a short presentation to Nottingham High School. We talked about how amazing Edna G. Olds Academy is and gave them an insight into a typical day.

We talked about film week and showed year 4’s film – they loved it!

We look forward to hosting them again next year. 

Year 2 Discovery Day

On 14^th January, Year 2 visited Nottingham University to take part in a Discovery Day. They had a tour of the campus and learnt from current students what it’s like to study at university. They discussed subjects they might like to study through further education and even thought about which societies they might like to join. They were also fascinated by the rooms inside the old buildings and used photos of the campus to prompt art work back at school.

Year 5 STEM Day

On Monday 27th January, Year 5 visited the Belgrave Rooms to participate in a S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) event. As part of the event, we participated in a variety of different activities linked to S.T.E.M such as making and designing wind turbines, finding out about science and sport, trying out different sports technology and using batteries to problem solve with electric model cars. My favourite activity was making a wind turbine. We had to use paper to find the most efficient shape of blades to add to the turbines. After that, we tested them and measured how much energy each turbine produced. I worked with a group of other children from L.E.A.D schools and it was fun to make new friends. 

Year 5 Learn by Design Morning

On Thursday 9th January, Year 5 attended a workshop by the Learn by Design Team. This was in preparation for our forthcoming S.T.E.M day later this month. As part of the session we thought about different types of energy and how this travels around the country. We also thought about disability and the challenges people with different disabilities face on a daily basis. The learning from this session will be used later this month on the S.T.E.M activity day. We are looking forward to using our creativity and problem solving skills!

KS2 Christmas Production

Over last term, year 6 pupils planned the theme for the KS2 Christmas production on 17th December. Inspiration for the play was taken from the topic last term of 'Carnivals and Festivals Around the World'. As a class, we decided to include aspects of our fashion show within the performance, coming up with title 'A Christmas Carnival', where the story followed a trio of carnival enthusiasts as they discovered some of the different traditions of Christmas. Some of the members of the class also supported in creating our own carnival cart, which we were able to use within the production.

Comic Relief

In order to raise money for Comic Relief, Pupil Voice Council have decided to ask children to come into school wearing something red and also hold a cake sale. They have written to parents asking for donations of cakes and biscuits and worked with the catering staff to come up with some Comic Relief related treats. Throughout the day, each class will have the opportunity to buy the delicious creations. In class, children will be learning about Comic Relief and why we raise money for this cause.

Visit to NUAST- Robotics Workshop

As part of our computing curriculum, Edna G. Olds Academy has established links with Nottingham University Academy of Science and Technology. The Year 6 children recently visited the campus to enjoy a robotics workshop led by one of the teachers and some A-Level students. The children were given the task of creating a robot to do a specific job and spent the first session exploring the software and robotic technology available to them. They are looking forward to continuing this project over the course of this year.

World Book Day

To celebrate World Book Day 2019, Pupil Voice Council planned a special day for children in school. Alongside dressing up as their favourite characters from books, Pupil Voice Council decided that each class should spend the morning using their creativity to create a character. Different media were used to bring the characters to life and they were then swapped with children in a partner class. Upon swapping characters, the children were then tasked with writing a story about the character they had been given. Some great stories were produced by the children and they particularly enjoyed sharing their work with the children who had created the character originally. Alongside this, a special book themed lunch was prepared by the catering team which included 'Golden Snitch Garlic Bread' and 'Willy Wonka's Chocolate Dessert'.

Topic Launch Day- Science

On the first day of this half-term, the children enjoyed a topic launch day related to their new science topics. A variety of exciting, hands-on, activities were planned across school which gave the children an insight into their new topics and inspired lots of questions which they are excited about answering this half-term. In Year 6, as part of the light and electricity topic, the children were set a challenge of using electrical components to create an alarm system in a house to alert the owner of any intruders. The children thoroughly enjoyed coming up with creative ways to solve this problem and showed true creativity in their solutions!

The children enjoyed having the opportunity to visit the shop to 'spend' their vouchers and had fun participating in the different activities.

Space Dome

As part of their science topic on space, the children in Year 5 welcomed a mobile planetarium-the space dome- into school. Almost filling the entire hall, the inflatable dome was used to project images of the stars and planets and some of the children said they felt like they were really in space! This learning opportunity has really inspired the children and was an amazing learning opportunity.

A Midsummer Night's Dream

Over the last seven weeks, the children in Year 6 have been working in collaboration with Nottingham Playhouse and five other schools across Nottingham to stage a production of Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. Each school was responsible for a specific section of the play which were then put together to be performed in the main stage at Nottingham Playhouse last week. The children thoroughly enjoyed the sessions preparing their part with Dawn, the practitioner from Nottingham Playhouse and were excited to perform on such a large stage in front of a packed auditorium.

Art Exhibition

At the end of Spring Term 1, parents were invited into school to look at the amazing art work created by children across school in a special exhibition. The children thoroughly enjoyed sharing their creativity with parents and it was great to have so many visitors to see the children's work.

Christmas Production

On Friday 14th December, KS2 put on their performance 'The True Meaning of Christmas'. Inspired by the recent work on consumerism, the children in year 6 decided that they wanted this year's production to have a message linked to this issue. The children had worked extremely hard in the run up to the production learning lines and songs and honing their acting skills. We hope that you enjoyed watching the production as much as the staff and children enjoyed preparing it.
